CHAPTER 10
I moved in the dark toward a distant light. It became brighter and warmer until my feet sank into a white, sandy beach. The vivid sky matched the turquoise waves that tugged at the shoreline. Two beach chairs faced the water under an umbrella made of palm leaves.
The empty chair was for me.
I slid in beside Trevor and he reached for my hand. Dressed only in knee-length shorts and sunglasses, he gazed out at the water as though hypnotized. I felt the urge to run my hand over his bare chest.
I got it. “So, is this Heaven, Aruba, or a dream?” I asked aloud. The movement of the waves was entrancing…relaxing…calming.
“Take your pick,” he said after a moment.
“Nice work. I like what you’ve done with the place.” I looked down and found that I wore a flattering black bathing suit with a short wraparound skirt. Definitely a dream—no bathing suit in the real world ever fit this well. I nodded with approval. I even had a tan. How thoughtful of him.
Trevor’s thumb stroked gently against my hand. Soothing. Warm. We stayed like that, not talking, not even thinking anything much, just being together and enjoying the closeness. Peaceful—the opposite of our nightmares. And Trevor had created it for us. Magic. Contentment filled us both up and made us whole. We relaxed and enjoyed being whole together.
Eventually, the edges of the world seemed to unravel and we both felt ourselves being pulled out of the fantasy and back into the reality. I squeezed my eyes shut and concentrated on committing the dream to memory. I stored up all of the details: the warmth of the sand; the contours of Trevor’s bare chest; the smell of the sea air. When I opened my eyes, I was back on my cot in the cold church.
Trevor looked down at me with concern. “What are you doing? Are you okay?”
Got it! I grinned as I flashed my newest memory to him.
A huge smile broke across his face and he laughed with delight. “It worked!”
“That was the real you?”
He nodded excitedly.
“You actually did it!” The man of my dreams.
“Yup. It was the third time I tried it, too. You didn’t come for the first two. I think we must’ve been dreaming at different times.”
I usually didn’t remember many of my dreams. But this one…this one I’d never forget. I knew I’d treasure the memory for the rest of my life.
It seemed pathetically anticlimactic to have to get up and go to class after such an experience. We lost track of time, and then had to rush to get to our respective dorms to shower and dress. I would’ve gone hungry, but Trevor came into psych class with a cup of coffee and half a bagel, which he surreptitiously placed on my desk as he slid into the seat next for me. A lump of gratitude filled my throat. I knew I didn’t deserve this incredible guy, but darned if I wouldn’t rip the still-beating heart out of anyone who got between us.
